Homosexuality was long time a huge taboo in India. The law, introduced by the British back in 1833, made gay people outlaws and outcasts. So the gay community had to go underground and hide themselves. But since the mid-nineties there is a wind of change. Especially in Indias big cities the gay communities are getting out of there closets.

This 28minute fresh and colourful documentary of the year 1998 shows just how society in India changes and how the gay population knows how to take their chance. It gives you an insight into the so long forbidden world of gay Bombay (today Mumbai) and takes a closer look on some of the pioneers of this time. The documentary brings you to unknown places like gay-meeting points around the Gateway of India; the gay “Vodoo”-disco, the celebration of the goddess Yellama, of enochs and gays. 
The film is focused on 22-years old Rahul. He seems to be a Bollywood-character – but one of the rather naughty ones: the way Rahul is doing a striptease is a courageous way of coming-out to the world.

Homosexualität war in Indien lange Zeit ein Tabu. Denn laut Paragraph 377 des indischen Strafgesetzbuches, ein Überbleibsel der britischen Kolonialzeit, sind homosexuelle Handlungen verboten. Homosexuelle wurden in den Untergrund gedrängt, kaum einer traute sich öffentlich aufzutreten.

Doch seit Mitte der 90er Jahre regt sich in den Grossstädten Widerstand, versuchen Homosexuelle aus dem Schweigen auszubrechen. Aus dieser Zeit des Aufbruchs stammt die 28minütige freche, farbige Dokumentation über die Homoszene Bombay (heute Mumbai). Sie lässt wichtige Exponenten der ersten Stunde zu Wort kommen und gibt Einblick in unbekannte Welten und Schauplätze wie den Schwulentreff rund ums Gateway of  India, die Schwulendisco Vodoo, das Fest der Göttin Yellama, die von Homosexuellen und Eunuchen gleichermassen verehrt wird. Im Zentrum des Films aber steht der schwule 22jährige Rahul, eine Figur wie aus einem Bollywood-Film. Mit seiner Striptease wagt er ein mutiges Coming-out.
